The Familiar Faces of Thistlevale

When Thistlevale needs a hero, a messenger, a little help—or sometimes just someone to stir up a bit of trouble—one of these four usually ends up becoming part of the story.

Sir George, the famously nosey squirrel, somehow manages to find himself involved in everyone’s business. Luckily, his curiosity has made him incredibly useful to King Roman, who often relies on George to travel between the Seven Animal Kingdoms and discover what is happening beyond Thistlevale’s borders. His friendly personality rarely reveals just how nosey he truly is—but the mischievous fairies know exactly how George works. They frequently whisper ridiculous tales into his ear just to see how far the story will travel before someone figures out they made the whole thing up.

Then there is Marabell, Thistlevale’s beloved gardener. She rarely goes anywhere without a crown of fresh flowers tucked between her horns. When someone needs a bouquet, fresh herbs for supper, or simply a peaceful place to sit for a while, they usually find themselves at Marabell’s cottage. Her gardens are some of the most beautiful in the kingdom—which, of course, makes them irresistible to the fairies. Nearly every night, they rearrange something she worked on during the day just to keep her busy.

Fortunately, Mrs. Betty rarely lets Marabell stay discouraged for long. Betty is the kingdom’s collector of buttons, ribbons, scraps of lace, tiny trinkets, and anything else humans might consider too small or ordinary to keep. Give her a handful of forgotten treasures and she can quickly turn them into something decorative enough to make Marabell smile again. She also has a remarkable talent for spotting fairy mischief long before anyone else does.

And then there is Lord Bloom, the magnificent blue peacock who firmly believes absolutely everything should be elegant at all times. His pearls are always perfectly draped, his feathers carefully arranged, and his opinions freely given whether anyone asked for them or not.

Lord Bloom is especially fond of commenting on the state of Marabell’s gardens whenever the fairies have made a mess of them—despite knowing perfectly well who caused the trouble.
